line-height: normal !important;\">The information in this article only pertains to setting up WordPress under XMission Unlimited Shared Hosting.\u00a0 Other web hosting services will vary greatly, so just keep it simple and use XMission.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">WordPress<\/a> is a popular, free, full-featured blogging tool and CMS (Content Management System) which is a great solution for many website needs.\u00a0 There is a plethora of <a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/\" target=\"_blank\">plug-ins<\/a>, help guides and other resources on the net to assist WordPress site operators in creating a rich user experience.<\/p>\n<p>Setting up WordPress on your XMission shared hosting is a breeze, and I&#8217;ll walk you through that as well as basic customizations of your WordPress website.\u00a0 In future posts, I will cover implementation, more advanced customizations, and features.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start by pointing your browser at <a href=\"http:\/\/hosting.xmission.com\">hosting.xmission.com<\/a> and login with the account information you created when you ordered XMission hosting.\u00a0 This user\/password information is also emailed to the address you specify when setting up the hosting account.<\/li>\n<li>When you are successfully logged in you will see the Parallels Plesk Control Panel screen, as shown:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/xmission.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/wp-plesk.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2314\" alt=\"wp-plesk\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/wp-plesk-300x151.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/xmission.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/wp-plesk-300x151.png 300w, https:\/\/xmission.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/wp-plesk.png 1021w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Click the <strong>Application<\/strong>s tab, and then click the<strong> Install<\/strong> button.\u00a0 This will install WordPress with the default options.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/xmission.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/wp-install.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2318\" alt=\"wp-install\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/wp-install-300x93.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"93\" srcset=\"https:\/\/xmission.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/wp-install-300x93.png 300w, https:\/\/xmission.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/wp-install.png 625w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> If you want to customize options, click the drop down arrow and choose <strong>Install (custom)<\/strong>.\u00a0 By default, WordPress will install to a folder named &#8220;wordpress&#8221;, so the URL would be http:\/\/<em>yourdomain.com<\/em>\/wordpress.\u00a0 You may want to install WordPress in your root folder so it can be reached via simply http:\/\/<em>yourdomain.com<\/em>.\u00a0 To do this, select <strong>Install (custom)<\/strong> and blank out the folder field on the &#8220;Installation of WordPress&#8221; page, as shown:\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2317\" alt=\"wp-folder\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/wp-folder1.png\" width=\"624\" height=\"129\" srcset=\"https:\/\/xmission.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/wp-folder1.png 624w, https:\/\/xmission.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/wp-folder1-300x62.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Wait a few moments for the installation to complete, then you will be greeted with a success message and some links. To preview your WordPress site, you can click <strong>Blog<\/strong> under <strong>Public access entry points<\/strong> in the right column.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Now comes the fun part, customizing your WordPress site!<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>From the right column on the XMission Hosting \/ WordPress page, select <strong>Administrative Interface<\/strong> to be logged in automatically to your WordPress Admin Panel.\u00a0 The admin panel can also be reached directly via http at <em>yourdomain.com<\/em>\/<em>wordpresspath<\/em>\/wp-admin. Your WordPress admin login user\/password is the same as your XMission hosting account user\/password.<\/li>\n<li>From the admin panel left menu, choose <strong>Appearance \/ Themes<\/strong>.\u00a0 Your current theme will be named with a preview image at screen top.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s go ahead and jump over to the <strong>Install Themes<\/strong> tab and pick a new one.<\/li>\n<li>You can search on a keyword for your theme, or select a link such as <strong>Featured<\/strong> or <strong>Newest<\/strong> to start seeing options.\u00a0 When you find a theme you like, click\u00a0<strong>Install now<\/strong> under the preview image.\u00a0 WordPress will give you feedback about your installation, and then present some links.\u00a0 Choose\u00a0<strong>Activate<\/strong> to make your new theme active.<\/li>\n<li>Each theme has different customization options.\u00a0 Click the <strong>Customize<\/strong> link to manage items like colors, background images, etc.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t be afraid to play around and experiment.\u00a0 If you break something, you can always re-install the theme and start over.\u00a0 However, it&#8217;s pretty unlikely you will be able to break your website through the Customize options, unless you try very hard.<\/li>\n<li>I recommend selecting your theme before adding content and other media, as different themes have different sizing schemes and element visibility.\u00a0 You can customize your theme even more through use of custom CSS and the template editor &#8211;\u00a0 I&#8217;ll cover that in a future blog post.\u00a0 Once you are happy with your theme, jump over to <strong>Settings &gt; General<\/strong> from the WordPress Admin left menu, bottom option.\u00a0 Here you can set your site title, tagline, email address for notifications, and other options.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You and your website are now ready to conquer the world!\u00a0 Check this blog regularly for more hints and tips for expanding the functionality and experience of your WordPress website.\u00a0 Then, the galaxy!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The information in this article only pertains to setting up WordPress under XMission Unlimited Shared Hosting.\u00a0 Other web hosting services will vary greatly, so just keep it simple and use XMission.
