The
Utah State Library for the Blind and Disabled has contacted
us (Davis County Family Home Evening Group) asking for volunteers
to help them with their reading program. They serve over 13,000
patrons in Utah and Wyoming who have a physical disability
that prevents them from reading on their own. Many of their
patrons are visually impaired but they also serve others who
have trouble reading printed media because they cannot hold
a book or they cannot turn the page. They also serve many individuals
who have dyslexia.
° Every
year they receive hundreds of requests for new titles to
be available for their patrons. With the help of their volunteers
they are
able to record the voices reading books for their patrons.
They can then make copies of those recordings onto cassette
tapes
that will be mailed to their patrons.
° The
most requested subject matter by their patrons is what they
call "of a local nature" (i.e. Utah History,
LDS Novels and Biographies of LDS Church Leaders). Many
of their
current volunteers are not willing to read the LDS material
requested by their patrons. They, therefore, are looking
for more LDS volunteers to fill this need. They are in
need of
volunteers who are able to volunteer at least once a week
for an hour and a half per visit. Volunteers' opportunities
are
from 7:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The Utah State Library for
the Blind is closed evenings, weekends and state holidays.
